Vinny Stapley  “Mersea Florilegeum”

It was such a pleasure to welcome Vinny Stapley to share with us her journey with “Mersea Florilegeum” and how the local salt marsh has inspired her textile adventures. We are looking forward to working with her next year at a workshop.

Jill Kipnis – Designing for Embroidery

Please note that all this work is under copyright to Jill.

Gill Venton

It was such a pleasure to welcome Gill to talk to us about her passion for the Kimbilio charity that works to improve the lives of homeless children in the DR Congo. Gill set up sewing classes that have changed the lives for many girls and she and her band of helpers make products here to raise funds to help continue this valuable project.

In the photos you can see some of the beautiful Congolese fabrics that Gill brought along to sell. Look here to find out more.

Diana Springall

It was a privilege and joy to welcome Diana Springall to our recent meeting. Her passion for design in embroidery is infectious. We look forward to being able to see her full collection at the New Embroidery Centre at Sunbury in the future.

Nigel Cheney

In June we welcomed back Nigel Cheney to lead us in a workshop and as before he arrived with a stunning collection of his work to inspire the participants. We are very honoured that he designed these beautiful bird prints especially for us to work on. Here are some samples of the work in progress and we look forward to seeing our group’s finished pieces.

Wendy Mansfield “Morris Flowers”

Our members had another very enjoyable workshop with Wendy Mansfield. Her “Morris Flowers” came with an incredible assorted kit of beautiful textiles as you can see in these photos. Thank you Wendy.

Bev Caleno

Bev, of Old Bank Studios in Harwich, inspired our members to create a stunning bark effect using paint, pelmet vilene, voile, fleece, organza, various threads and expand print. The results are amazing.

Jenny Adin-Christie

It was such a pleasure to welcome Jenny Adin-Christie back to talk to us again and to see her glorious work. No photo can do justice to her work so here are just a few samples. We hope to see you again next year Jenny!

Karen Nicol Designer of embroidery and textile fashion.  April 2023

Thank you to Karen Nicol for sharing her amazing work with us at our April meeting. It was a real pleasure to hear how Karen developed her ideas and techniques through commissions into her inspirational large pieces.

Amy Burt Silk Shading Workshop March 2023

Amy very patiently taught us the finer details for successful silk shading. We were shown how to create a secure edge to our block or curved shape before introducing the long and short (but not too short) stitches. Amy also explained how the direction and angle of stitch has impact on your result. We thoroughly enjoyed Amy’s workshop and hope that it will not be too long before she is able to join us again.

Helen Barnes Panama Mola Workshop

It was a pleasure to have Helen join us again for this very interesting and therapeutic workshop. We learnt how to use reverse, overlay and inlay applique to make a sample of this intricate design used to make traditional panels to form the bottom half of blouses.  Our zoom photos. Three completed pieces have been added.

Darren Ball “It ain’t what you do, it’s the way that you do it!”

Darren inspired us with his amazing knitted samples and how he incorporated knitted sections into his work along with free motion machine embroidery and applique. Vintage embroidery and handkerchiefs formed the basis of several of his pieces.

Lora Avedian  “Stitch in Bloom”

Thank you to Lora Avedian for sharing her ‘Stitches In Bloom’ journey with us. Our members really enjoyed seeing her beautiful work.
